World number one foil fencer Andrea Baldini has failed a doping test and will miss the Beijing Olympics.
The Italian Olympic Committee revealed on Friday that Baldini tested positive for a banned diuretic at the European Championships in Kiev last month.
The 22-year-old had been one of Italy's top fencing medal hopes for the Olympics and was tipped for the gold.
But he will be replaced in the Italian fencing squad by Andrea Cassara, says the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper.

The first full dress rehearsal of the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games was held in secret at the National Stadium on Thursday night, reported China's Central Television (CCTV).
Tight security was deployed outside the stadium to keep the program of the three-and-a-half hour opening ceremony confidential, said the brief CCTV item.
Three cordon fences circled the stadium, better known as the Bird's Nest for its unique structure of interwoven steel beams. Armed police only unlocked the gates for vehicles with special passes, according to the TV footage.
Workers were still putting finishing touches on the venue, which will be the center stage for both the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics and Paralympics.
All of the workers on duty had signed agreements with the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee (BOCOG) to keep what they saw confidential, according to BOCOG.
Two directors of the ceremony, Wang Chaoge and Fan Yue, attended a media debut of the outdoor performance "Impression West Lake" in Beijing on Thursday.
Wang disclosed that the elements of "Sichuan" and "Wenchuan" will be embodied in the opening ceremony in tribute to the Chinese spirit manifested after the devastating May 12 earthquake that hit southwest China's Sichuan Province.
He said the biggest headache for the organizers of the ceremonies was the weather.
"It is the one thing beyond human control. Rain would cause delays in the progress of the event, as it would dampen performers' costumes and props," Wang said.
Zhang Yimou, director-in-chief of the ceremony, said at the one-month countdown to the Games on Tuesday that all the crew worked at night to better adjust themselves to the evening performance. They took an oath on the countdown to struggle hard for a successful event.
Zhang's team made three years of preparations for the show, which is expected by Chinese to showcase the essence of China's rich culture, concept and vision to the world.
Sources with the team said there would be three more rehearsals of the opening ceremony.

A Korean film crew gained access to the Bird's Nest Olympic Stadium yesterday to rehearse the Korean national broadcast of the Olympic Games. While the cameramen were inside, they secretly filmed a rehearsal of the opening ceremony, also being rehearsed at the Bird's Nest. This video has been banned on the Chinese news site Sina.com and has been taken off YouTube in mainland China.

The Korean news report claims that the ceremony has been prepared for over 3 years and China has spent over $300,000,000 on, what according to the Korean station, is the most "magnificent, brilliant and mysterious" ceremony in Olympic history. The report claims the video features over 10,000 performers -- kung-fu fighters, trapeze artists and traditional Chinese dancers -- using the "most modern of laser technology" to execute the 10-second Olympic countdown. The only mystery still left for the opening is how the Olympic torch will arrive to the Bird's Nest and who will be the final torch bearer.

D'Arcy charged over nightclub assault

Australian Olympic swimming team qualifier Nick D'Arcy has been charged by police over the assault of former Commonwealth Games swimmer Simon Cowley.
Police have now charged D'Arcy with one count of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, and one count of assault.
The charges relate to a fight with Cowley at a Sydney nightclub early on Sunday morning.
The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has announced it will hold a joint investigation with Swimming Australia (SA) into the incident.
The AOC's vice-president Peter Montgomery will chair the inquiry, with both D'Arcy and Cowley to be interviewed.
Cowley was still undergoing treatment for a number of facial fractures today.
Swimming Australia's chief executive Glenn Tasker says D'Arcy's spot in the Australian swimming team is in doubt.
"Given the nature of the charges and the timeframe that it will take for the legal process to happen, I wouldn't want to pre-empt the AOC and their decision, but certainly his position at this point is in some doubt," he told the ABC's PM program.
D'Arcy, from Queensland's Sunshine Coast, has qualified to swim the 100 and 200 metres butterfly in the Beijing Olympics but the AOC has the power to drop him if he is found to have brought the team in to disrepute.
Former Olympic champion Kieran Perkins says if Nick D'Arcy is found guilty of assault he cannot take part in the Beijing Olympics.
"If somebody is found guilty of such a serious crime then you would have to think there's no place for that on our Australian team," he said.
National coach Alan Thomson says D'Arcy will have to live with the incident for the rest of his career.
"I don't think situations like this wash off," Mr Thomson said.
"I think this is some baggage that Nick will carry with him for quite a while and it's something that he'll have to face up to at some stage during his career."
Swimming great Dawn Fraser says the sport cannot afford to have alcohol-fuelled incidents ruin its reputation.
Fraser was one of the Australian Olympians who greeted the 2008 team after it was announced on Saturday evening.
She says all members of the team have a responsibility to behave.
"It shouldn't happen because these guys are an inspiration to all the younger generation of this country and we don't want them, like footballers, going out, boozing up and making a bad image for not only themselves, but for the sport," she said.

Host China announces biggest-ever Olympic team of 639 athletes

Beijing Games host China will send their biggest-ever Olympic team of 639 athletes to compete on home soil next month.

The 1099-strong delegation also include 460 officials for the Games to be opened on Aug. 8, according to deputy chef de Mission Duan Shijie here on Friday.

Men's 110 meters hurdling Olympic champion Liu Xiang, NBA star Yao Ming and diving queen Guo Jingjing will spearhead the biggest squad in Beijing to compete in all 28 sports.

Shooter Tan Zongliang, 37, is one of the three athletets making their fourth Olympic trip. The other two are basketballer Li Nan and Guo, two time Olympic champion on women's pringboard.

Thirty-seven athletes of the team will enjoy their third Games while 165 have been to Athens.

"I'm getting better with good training and no injury. All I have to do in the Olympic track is to beat myself," said Liu, who became the national hero by winning Chinese men's first-ever athletics Olympic gold medal in 2004.

In a ceremony held at the announcement of the delegation, all the present members pledged, facing the Chinese national flag, that they will complete clean and fair, respecting opponents, judges and spectators.

The Chinese delegation also include 42 minority athletes, participating in 18 sports, and 38 foreign coaches including men's basketball manager Jonas Kazlauskas of Lithuania.

The full list will be revealed later at the Beijing Olympic Games official website.
